Whew! My final two weeks in Sonoma were a whirl of finals, senior capstone presentation, and moving all my belongings back home; before I could take a breather, I was on a flight to DC for the summer!
I have visited the district a few times before but always for short visits. It is very exciting to be here for the entire summer! I am looking forward to exploring all the hidden nooks and crannies.

This first week has kicked off what promises to be an exciting summer!  It began at the American Center for physics in College Park.

In April, Drew and I had visited D.C. to attend AAAS’ CASE workshop. There we had learned about how science legislation comes to be and explored some parts of D.C. Needless to say, I left excited to come back and spend my summer working and exploring.

The first few days in DC included some friendship-building and touristy fun in the city before work began. Having not been to DC in many years, it was a great experience to explore the city and see many of the historic sites. Our first full day lead us to the National Mall where the Rolling Thunder was hosting their Ride to the Wall event, an annual motorcycle rally to bring attention to individuals in the American military that are missing in action or prisoners of war. We explored many monuments around the mall – including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial – with more than 300,000 individuals in the city for the event.

Woohoo!  First week in D.C.!  This week has been surreal.  I met a Nobel Laureate, talked with members of the SPS leadership, and started working at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  After flying in to D.C. on Saturday, I met up with some interns and went out to see the city.

Whew! This first week has been a whirlwind of excitement! Between moving to a new city, meeting all new people, and exploring new surroundings... It’s been non-stop fun and adjusting so far! I honestly couldn't believe that I was moving to D.C. And yet there I stood outside my new temporary home, both eager and a bit nervous.

I have a shirt. Most of you reading this already know the one I'm talking about. For those who don't, here it is.

This was quite an amazing summer. I could not have asked for a better opportunity, and I am so glad that I found the SPS Internship program! During my weeks as a Mather Policy Intern, I learned so much.

The final week at work was a bit calmer, as we eased into recess. Tours were plentiful – though I cannot imagine who would want to come to DC in August for their vacation. Throughout the week, I wrote my final letters and memos, constantly thinking: Will this be my final memo?

It's hard to imagine that my SPS summer internship is over. It seems like it was just yesterday I was at ACP working on polarizers for the SOCK and then going out to dinner with the interns. It's funny how fast time flies, not as fast as light, but still funny none the less.
