Pomona College
2021
Herbert Levy Memorial Scholarship
My name is Collins Kariuki. I am currently a rising sophomore (class of 2024) at Pomona College. Although I have not yet declared my major, I plan to pursue the pre-engineering track that Pomona College has with Dartmouth College. I intend to double major in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering (Dartmouth College) and Physics (Pomona College) and minor in Cognitive Science or Linguistics (Pomona College).
I was introduced to SPS by upperclassmen during my freshman year, and I got to see the remarkable work that SPS does not only at Pomona College but also around the US. I instantly knew that I had to get involved, and I registered as a member. I plan to become Pomona's chapter leader and serve as our zone's councillor as I progress with my academics.
This coming summer (2021), I will research Applied Probability, Theoretical Computer Science and Analysis & Optimisation through the David Harold Blackwell Summer Research Institute. Aside from that, I also conduct biosystems research with one of the Pomona physics professors where we work on seed dispersal. I hope to use this and future research to improve my home country's health care system; this is one of my primary goals to promote biomedical research in Kenya and promote awareness of the use of prostheses.
In my free time, I enjoy engaging in scientific journalism where I write articles for the National Collegiate Journal of Science (NCJS) as a staff writer and also for the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science (DUJS) as a member. I also love playing soccer, hiking and all things adventuresome.
