Chad Kishimoto is an associate professor in the Department of Physics & Biophysics at the University of San Diego. Born and raised in Honolulu, he received his BS in physics at Caltech and PhD at UC San Diego in theoretical neutrino astrophysics. After a postdoc at UCLA, he was a “freeway flier” (a part-time college instructor teaching simultaneously at many locations) for several years, teaching all levels of physics and astronomy (general education, lower and upper division, graduate) throughout all levels of California public institutions (community colleges, CSU, UC) before finally finding a home at USD. He is an Assistant Research Scientist at UC San Diego and serves on the executive board of the Southern California section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. One of his first projects at USD was to encourage and support students to revive the long-defunct SPS chapter at USD. This fortuitously coincided with an increase in majors and has had a distinctive positive effect on departmental culture amongst students (and between faculty and students as well). He is proud of the chapter’s work, which has been recognized as an Outstanding Chapter on multiple occasions and received the Blake Lilly Prize for outreach work with a local Title I school.
