Science Outreach Catalyst KitScience Outreach Catalyst Kits, or SOCKs, contain exploratory physics and science activities specifically designed for SPS chapters to use in outreach presentations to local elementary, middle and high school students. Each SOCK comes with an instruction manual and a classroom set of materials. SOCKs are created and assembled annually by the SPS national interns and national office staff.

The 2014-15 SPS SOCK—Light: A Spectrum of Utility

In an effort to unite the International Year of Crystallography and the International Year of Light, the 2014-15 SOCK features elements of each of these areas, and brings the concept of Light: A Spectrum of Utility to life. Students will explore how we use light on a daily basis, and what it can tell us about matter and its structure through 8 activities ranging from determining the structure of a CD with lasers, to creating their own “stained glass” masterpieces using polarization.

Request an SPS SOCK for Your Chapter

  1. SPS SOCK requests are accepted only through an online application form. You will need to create an SPS awards account if you do not have one already.
  2. After logging in, click “Create a New Submission.” Under the “Category” dropdown box, select “SPS SOCK Request” and complete the required forms.
  3. Please note that you will be required to provide:
    • Contact information and SPS membership number for the student project leader.
    • Your school and SPS chapter information.
    • A paragraph describing your chapter's interest in outreach and how you plan to use the SPS SOCK.
    • Your SPS advisor’s name and email address. Your advisor will be asked to confirm his/her support of your proposed SOCK activity.

SPS SOCKs are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis among the eligible requests. Approximately 25 are available each year.
