I'm Pat Engel, a senior, Physics major at the University of Notre Dame and soon-to-be first year grad student at MIT (Dept. Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science). I was born and raised in Hawaii, so this summer will be my introduction to the East Coast.
My previous research experiences include studying dusty plasmas (at Auburn University, AL), IR spectroscopy of ammonia-hydrocarbon ices relevant to Jupiter's atmosphere (at SRI International, northern CA), and nuclear astrophysics (at ND). At NIST I am looking forward to developing some theoretical skills :).
Also, I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve as President and Past President of ND's chapter of SPS, which has encouraged my desire to explore and contribute to the national science community.
On a personal level, I'm excited to see that many of us have common interests! I enjoy juggling, cooking, writing, studying languages (Spanish and a little German, though I'd love to learn a little French), hiking, swimming, knitting, exploring, ethnic dancing (hula, ballet folklorico, irish folk), and eating 'local' hawaiian foods (aka mixed and modified asian-polynesian).
I look forward to meeting you!!!
