Philip W. "Bo" Hammer is Vice President of the Franklin Institute
in Philadelphia, PA. Previously he was Assistant Director
of the American Institute of Physics, Education Division.
Hammer also runs Take Physics Local, a program to address
simultaneously the professional development needs of physics
students and the technical and workforce needs of industry
and communities; and other programs designed to improve the
quality and utility of physics education for students and
teachers.
Hammer
received his BS in Physics in 1987 from Humboldt State University
in Arcata, CA, and his PhD in Physics from the University
of Oregon in 1991. From 1991 to 1993, he was an Office of
Naval Research Postdoctoral Fellow at the Naval Surface Warfare
Center in Silver Spring, MD, doing experimental nonlinear
dynamics research. Subsequently, Hammer worked as an American
Physical Society Congressional Science Fellow working on the
staff of the Subcommittee on Science in the US House of Representatives.
His primary interests on Capitol Hill were post-SSC high-energy
physics policy, earthquake hazards reduction, and the Government
Performance and Results Act.
Hammer
is well-published in many topics ranging from basic research,
to the role of physics in society, to career advice for scientists
