[an error occurred while processing this directive] Hi All,

My name is Wahab Salami. I’m a Nigerian. I was born and raised in Benin City, Edo State. Completed High school back home and started college over here. I am currently a senior at Chicago State University majoring in biophysics and a double minor in Biology and Chemistry. My ultimate goal is to attend Medical school to become a neurosurgeon or be a Medical Physicist. I love physics because it challenges me and also I learn something new about it everyday. I was the vice-president of the Young African Student Ambassador at my school and also played indoor league soccer for my school. Amongst others I am a tutor and also a TA for physics.

Well I am a very calm person and like to laugh a lot (it makes you look younger than your age). The first time you meet me, you quickly learn that football (soccer as you may call it) is my number one passion and I love this beautiful game. Hopefully when I eventually retire I would become a professional soccer player if I’m not too old. Other than soccer, I like going to the theatre, bowling (I’m still a rookie), playing Uno cards (one of the best), EATING and singing. I am really excited to be here in the D.C area (here for the first time) and meeting up with my fellow SPS interns. So far we are having a great time and can’t wait to get the ball rolling.

~Wahab

Friday, July 30th

After having a very eventful weekend, it was back to the last week of reporting to work. It’s kind of weird as to how this summer flew by. Well on Monday, I could not make it to work because I was a sick from food poisoning. I was on my bed most of the time until later in the evening. On Tuesday, I went to work still a little sick and started on a new project that entails updating the OSA student chapter’s booklist. This took most of my day and luckily I was able to finish it. I went home made dinner and enjoyed the rest of my day. On Wednesday, I started on a new project that just needs me to enter into an excel spreadsheet some assessment of a conducted event for high schools. By the end of Wednesday, I was half way done. I went home and made a really good dinner and before I knew what was going on I dozed off. On Thursday, at work we had a workers celebration day. It was fun and everyone attended the party. Lots of games, prizes to fun, music were playing and above all great food. It was a fun day. I almost won a prize but I came second instead. Played UNO cards and displayed some of my soccer skills. That was all that happened at work. On Friday, which unfortunately is my last day reporting to work, I finished all my outstanding projects chatted with my workers and cleared my work area. I was sad to leave because of the experience I had and so much with them. What a nice group of people. But I guess all good things must come to an end. I’m happy it all ended in a good note and I will never forget this experience. I went to the grocery store one last time to get some items. Made a wonderful dinner and I can’t wait to go over the other White House on Saturday that will be fun. This weekend is going to be juicy as it is my last. I have to make extra use of it while it lasts. Until next week its bye.

Friday, July 23rd

After returning from my trip it was back to work. On Monday, I had a surprise treat at work which was very touching and I’m blessed to be an intern at OSA. Well on Monday there was not much happening except I was introduced into some new projects. I completed the first part of the project and planned accordingly for the week ahead. It’s about watching a collection of OSA conferences and recording the times for each speaker and writing a summary of it. I was also introduced to this project that involves updating the student’s chapter spreadsheet for OSA. After work, I went to the gym and worked out. On Tuesday, I finished the first of my projects and started the second. Hopefully should be done soon. The only hard part about this project is just sitting for hours gazing at the screen of the computer. After work I went to the gym and made dinner. On Wednesday, I finally got through this project and started another easy one. These projects are nothing related to physics but other than that it is pretty cool. After work as usual, I went to the gym and listened to music. On Thursday, this was a really relaxing day as I pretty much completed the assigned project. Nothing really happened and looking forward to Friday. On Friday, I started on a new project just updating the Incubic Milton Chang Grant spreadsheet. I also updated the O4K spreadsheet. These were really cool projects. I went to lunch with group of workers to Alero restaurant. It was really nice. I had a great time really looking forward to the weekend. Overall this week was good next week will be better.

Friday, July 16th

After a very eventful weekend it was time to report back to work. On Monday, I basically started on a new project which it not a difficulty. All I have to do is give a detailed report on the milestones of the history of OSA. I started on it and hopefully I should be done soon. Luckily for me this week, there is a board meeting going on at my job which means free lunch for the whole week. I got a sandwich and even more to take home. After work, I went to the gym and was done for the day. On Tuesday, I continued on the project which I pretty much was done and turned in a rough draft to my supervisor. Went to the gym afterwards and my day was pretty much done. On Wednesday, I completed my project and turned it in. Basically that was it for the day as I won’t be starting on a new project until next week. I wasn’t around on Thursday and Friday as I was away to Chicago for personal reasons. On Saturday I was back in DC. On Sunday, I and some of the interns went to rent a speed boat which was fun. Unfortunately, I was the only one who cannot swim so I spent less time in the water. But all in all it was a nice experience for me as this was the first time I ever got on a boat. That’s it for this week stayed tuned.

Friday, July 9th

Last weekend was really awesome. It was the 4th and a lot of things were happening. Just a recap, I went to the national mall with the interns and walked around the place which was fun even though it was so hot. At the end of it all I saw the fireworks like never seen before. I had so much fun and wish I could control time.

Well, on Monday, I was home did not go to work. Nothing really happened except grocery shopping. On Tuesday, I was busy with the OSA student chapter social media sites. This is a pain because of the amount of chapters they have. Well, what this mean is that you have countries around the world that has OSA chapter that are active. All there is to do is locate those chapters and search for their websites, Facebook, twitter and any other media sites. On Wednesday, I continued on this project hoping I would be done. I gave a rough draft to my supervisor and was pretty impressed. After work, I went to the gym to work out and was so exhausted that I went to bed super early. On Thursday, I finished my project and turned in a report to my supervisor. After careful review, I got thumbs up from her and will be going to lunch for free next week. Hard work always pays. On Friday since I won’t be starting on a new project till next Monday, I was told to help with some office job. All I did was make photocopies of stuffs that lasted the whole day. I was so tired from doing that and won’t be applying for such a job in the nearest future.

After work, I went to the Washington national’s game with the whole crew. Even though it was my first time at a baseball game, it was fun because there is a lot to do and enjoy. As for the game I was completely lost. I clapped when others were clapping, stood when others did and did exactly what others were doing. Rules define games. Since I don’t know the rules of baseball it made it harder to understand. But thanks to Gary (who became a baseball professor as opposed to physics) explained the proceedings and game analysis to me. All in all it was fun and an experience I won’t forget. As for Saturday, I got free ticket to the Washington Monument from one of the interns and it was really good. These are moments that one can’t forget. Thanks to SPS for making this a dream come true for me. I have to go check my chicken until next week stay tuned.

Friday, July 2nd

After going to the great waterfalls with two other interns on Saturday, I was as relieved and excited as this was the first time I had actually climbed rocks to such a high place and walked down the trail. The waterfall was so good and everything we did on that weekend was awesome. On Sunday I stayed home all day and needed to rest for the week ahead.

On Monday, I started on the final part of my project which is to identify at least ten experiments that can be performed to students at a cheaper cost involving the use of laser. At first I found this to be extremely impossible because I never really understood how much experiments can be performed with the use of laser. The whole of Monday I seriously dedicated to researching from internet to books and magazines. Doing this really opened my eyes to the various experiments that can be done using laser. Later on that day, a student from San Francisco came to pay a visit to OSA so Kylee and I went to lunch with this student. The restaurant was really good and I would definitely be going back there before the summer runs out.

On Tuesday, I gathered five experiments and scheduled a meeting with my supervisor. We talked about the progress of the project and more tips on how I can proceed. This really motivated me because I was been guided and given a helping hand. By the end of the day, I finally came up with ten experiments that initially I thought would not be possible.

On Wednesday, I started my write ups for all ten experiments. This was a pain because I spent the entire day typing and editing. At the end of the day, I finished my project but my back was sore from sitting.

On Thursday, I combined all of the experiments for the kit into an excel template and did a summary of them all. There were about twenty experiments in all. At the end of the day, I got sick and was having high temperature. I took some medicine which made me sleepy. By the time I woke up, it was about 9pm. I was disgusted because I had wanted to go to the barbeque of the Dylla. I was really looking forward to it because I know I would have eaten so much and even packaged some home.

On Friday, I worked on the OSA student chapter handbook which requires finding the website, facebook, twitter and other social media site. This requires so much work because there are over 150 student chapters around the world.

For the weekend, it is going to be really juicy because a lot of activities are planned for the 4th. Luckily enough for me, I don’t have to be at work on Monday the 5th of July, 2010. It’s fun, fun, fun and more fun this weekend. The only thing still keeping me from going out right now is this journal. I don’t want to get in trouble so now that I am done its party time. Until next week from me, myself and I it’s adios.

Friday, June 25th

My journey began on the 19th of June, 2010at 2:30pm when I had to say goodbye to a loved one and board the plane to DC. I arrived DC at about 5:30pm and on getting off, I headed straight for my luggage. I searched around for that special luggage but was no where to be found. What that simply meant was welcome to DC. Well I informed the airlines and they finally returned it to me the following day after all my fellow interns had gone to the museum.

On Monday, I went over to the ACP building with my roommate who knows virtually his way round DC like he lived here before so I’m lucky to have him as a roomy. It took us 45 minutes to get there and I noticed certain similarities between drivers in DC and Chicago. Anyways, at ACP I meant Kendra who is the program director and also Gary who is her boss. They touched base with me and I was astonished that Gary knew almost all my physics professors at school. I was introduced to the other interns and shown around the building. At noon they had lunch for everyone, it was really good. After that Kendra and I went over to OSA, the place of my internship. Everyone was so welcoming and nice. I was treated like a king and meant my managers (Barbara and Kathryn) who would be directing all my projects. Time flew so fast and day 1 at work was over. When I got home my roomy and I went jogging past the monuments and capitol building which was pretty cool. On Tuesday first day at work I was dressed like I had an appointment with the president. Initially I lost my way but later found it (first time in DC). I was introduced to my projects and it involved going through some of the laser kits they had and rating them on how informative they are. Also I had to develop some trivial questions involving lasers it’s really exciting. I went on lunch with my co-workers and ate a really delicious burger. It was awesome but I think I ate too much. Worked on my project and it was time to go home. Later that day, I went to the gym and worked out for 90 minutes. On Wednesday, I continued on my project and met with my supervisor who is always ready to help when needed. As more projects were given more were done which is great. My co-supervisor took me to this Chinese restaurant which kind of reminded me of Chicago. It was some good food and I had a chance to talk to her about the progress of my project. After work went home and dozed off. On Thursday, I did some trivial questions and was introduced to my next project which I will start on next week. I went on lunch with my other supervisor to this Vietnamese restaurant, it was so good but I had to return to work. I went to the gym after work and made dinner. On Friday was the busiest day at work so far. I had a lot of work to accomplish and it took most of my time at work. Hopefully I will complete it early next week. I am really looking forward to the weekend because there is a lot to be accomplished on my to-do list. Until then it’s adios.

LaserFest and More at OSA

Abstract
I interned this summer at OSA, the Optical Society of America. I did some projects related to LaserFest, since the laser is 50 years old this summer, OSA student chapters, the Optics Kids mailing list, the OSA history website, and the youth education program. It was a great and very entertaining experience for me and I would encourage other students to intern at OSA because a lot would be gained.
