Previous Recipients & Award Information

  Cleveland State University
Cleveland State University SPS members conduct a "What will Float?" demonstration with elementary school children.
Cleveland State University

Members of the Cleveland State University SPS chapter provided fun and interactive activities with a different theme each month for after-school students at Campus International School, a public school in Cleveland, OH. These activities helped get young students excited about science and higher education by nurturing relationships through learning.

  Guilford College
A Guilford College SPS member engages students in science during an after-school outreach program .
Guilford College

The Guilford College SPS chapter started an after-school outreach program in conjunction with the Jefferson Elementary PTA and Guilford College Center for Principled Problem-Solving, a group that provides monetary and organizational support to Guilford community service efforts. They hosted a pilot after-school program in November 2011, which led to a multi-week program in March 2012. Activities focused on optical reflection, refraction, and chemical compounds, and drew approximately thirty students from between third to fifth grades.

  Hartnell Community College
Hartnell College SPS demonstrates electromagnetic induction to high school students at a STEM fair.
Hartnell Community College

Science outreach is very important to the Hartnell College SPS chapter. Often, science is not emphasized in local schools, so they held outreach events such as Physics Olympics, Technology Days, and activities at the North Salinas High School STEM Fair.

  Henderson State University
Henderson State University SPS members participate in a Physics Olympics outreach event.
Henderson State University

The Henderson State University SPS chapter participates in many outreach projects throughout the year, many of which are a continuation from past SPS Marsh White outreach awards. These include Star Parties after planetarium shows, a physics circus, and a physics Olympics. In addition, SPS members help in the Physics Focus Room, tutoring those who come by for some advice and help. They enjoy explaining, teaching, and demonstrating their knowledge to the community and inspiring the young minds of the future.
