USA Science and Engineering Festival
Come one come all to the greatest physics show on earth! How do all those clowns fit in one car? What makes carnival music so distinctive? Come into our circus and find out! Barnum and Bailey have nothing on us.
On April 27-29, SPS will join forces with five other physics organizations to create a one-of-a-kind physics circus for the second USA Science and Engineering Festival! Big Top Physics (Hall B, Booth #1527) is a joint project between SPS, APS, AAPT, ASA, OSA, and the University of Maryland's MRSEC program
Outstanding Student Award for Undergraduate Research
SPS is soliciting from its student membership proposals for physics papers to be presented at the 2012 International Conference of Physics Students (ICPS), August 4-10, 2012, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Up to two student papers will be selected. Winners will receive a $500 honorarium and a $500 award for their SPS Chapter, as well as expenses for transportation, room, board, and registration for the 2012 ICPS.

SPS Invited to 2012 Quadrennial Physics Congress
All members of SPS are invited to the 2012 Quadrennial Physics Congress, or PhysCon for short. This meeting, hosted by Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society, will take place in Orlando, FL, and will center on the theme Connecting Worlds Through Science & Service. Undergraduates, practicing physicists, and physics alumni from a broad spectrum of career paths will gather together to address the interconnectivity of the modern world and what it means to science.
2011 International Conference of Physics Students
The 2011 ICPS conference marked the 25th anniversary of ICPS (and the 24th year of IAPS). Since its founding in 1986, the conference has been held in many cities across Europe, but ICPS returned to its home in Budapest in 2011 to celebrate this milestone. As has become the norm, the conference timetable included mostly student lectures and poster presentations, as well as invited lectures, parties, and an excursion.
Best Presentation at the ACA Undergraduate Research Symposium
This year, there were two winners of the best presentation award at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at the 2011 Meeting of the American Crystallographic Association in New Orleans, LA. To find out more about the meeting, visit their website. The winners, Mary Parker (left) and Stephanie Cowin (right), each received $200 awards sponsored by SPS & AIP.

2011 International Conference of Physics Students
The ICPS consisted of student lectures, guest lectures, parties, a poster session, meals, and excursions to see Budapest. I attended many lectures given by students and guest speakers from 35 different countries, mostly from Eastern Europe. Overall, the conference was very enjoyable and well organized, creating a good mix of scientific discussion and cultural exploration.
Being Welcomed Into the World of Acoustics
The 161st Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA)provided an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and explore a great city.

Putting a New Face on Physics
By Krystle Williams, former SPS Associate Councilor
"What will the physics community look like 10 years from now? What should it look like? With the adoption of the theme “Future Faces of Physics,” these are the questions the Society of Physics Students (SPS) is encouraging you to ask yourself."
Former SPS Council member Krystle Williams brings SPS's Future Faces of Physics initiative to Symmetry readers. Symmetry is a magazine about particle physics and its connections to other aspects of life and science, from interdisciplinary collaborations to policy to culture. It is published by Fermilab and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Future Faces of Physics Jeopardy
With the theme Future Faces of Physics, (FFP) SPS is raising visibility and focus on issues of student diversity in physics. Future Faces of Physics Jeopardy is centered on this theme...try it out with friends or at your next SPS meeting!
If you would like to request a free FFP meeting kit that includes the Jeopardy game, please contact SPS. You can also compile your own kit.

The first man-made nuclear explosion
By L. Worth Seagondollar, Co-Founder of SPS and Professor Emeritus, North Carolina State University
This talk describes one of the greatest war-time experiences possible for a young graduate student in the 1940's, including an eye-witness account of the Trinity Test in the New Mexico desert. Near-catastrophic accidents, working with armed guards watching, Enrico Fermi asking you to come to his office—these are unforgettable adventures.
