Dr. DJ Wagner
President, Society of Physics Students

DJ WagnerDr. DJ Wagner is Professor of Physics at Grove City College (GCC), a small Christian liberal arts college with a robust science and engineering school, located in western Pennsylvania. She earned a B. S. in Physics and English at William and Mary before continuing to Vanderbilt University, where she received her M. S. and Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics (modeling neutrino oscillations). While finishing at Vanderbilt, Wagner became very interested in the growing field of Physics Education Research (PER), and she turned her attention to PER upon graduation. After holding visiting professorships at Angelo State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Wagner joined the faculty at GCC in 2001.

Wagner first became involved in SPS as a sophomore in college, when a classmate revived the William and Mary chapter. Outreach was of particular interest to that chapter, and it remains a passion of Wagner's today. When at Rensselaer, Wagner was appointed SPS Advisor and revived that formerly-inactive chapter. She has advised the GCC chapter of SPS since arriving in 2001, and she received the SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor award for the 2009-2010 academic year. At GCC, Wagner has stressed professional development of students, encouraging them to attend regional and national meetings of SPS, APS, AAPT, and other professional societies. GCC took 25 students to the 2008 Sigma Pi Sigma Congress at Fermilab, and 30 students to the 2012 Congress in Orlando, making the GCC chapter the second-largest group at each of these events. Wagner has served on the National Council for seven years. For 2004-2005 she was an Interim Zone Councilor, and she is now completing her second consecutive 3-year term (2007-2013) as a Zone Councilor. Wagner served on the Sigma Pi Sigma Congress planning committee during these years, helping to plan both the Fermilab and Orlando meetings.
